Are there differences in getting middle management from executive management on board for 1) developing the lean enterprise and 2) direct engagement on their part? What are the differences, if any?

All the examples of companies who have sustained lean thinking (and operational results) have common elements: 1) Principle -based leadership that acts as a rudder to create a constancy of purpose and alignment throughout the organization (note this is not based on a specific person); 2) Management systems that drive the right behavior; and 3) a culture of continuous problem solving, accountability, and shared responsibility. Who else besides Toyota is doing this successfully? Autoliv, Denver Health, Goodyear, John Deere, and Gulfstream Aerospace to name a few.
